Games 500 update…

Well this year saw us take part in virtually all of the sporting activities on offer at the Games 500 event! We had well over 100 children at the three days of competition last week ranging from Year 1 to Year 6. It was fantastic to see so many children enjoying themselves and taking part with such gusto! Amongst many excellent performances we achieved Gold medals in the archery, Year 5 and 6 tag rugby and boys team cross country race. There were some noteable individual performances in the Year 1/2 girls cross country with Edie finishing 2nd and Sochia 3rd overall out of at least 60 children and James and Max doing likewise in the Year 5/6 event! The Year 3/4 Tag Rugby and Year 1/2 boys cross country teams also won bronze medals.

A BIG THANK YOU to all the staff who came to help and all the family members and friends who came to watch and cheer the children on!

Games 500 2015

What a three days of competition we had at Benfield School from Wednesday last week! Over 100 children from Year 1 through to Year 6 competed in thirteen different events. To a child, everyone was a credit to themselves and the school as they displayed great determination, teamwork and sportsmanship whether finishing last or first and everything in between.

It was a particularly fruitful event with Cragside teams and individuals bring home 10 medals (5 gold, 4 silver and 1 bronze). A big thank you to Mr Forrester, Mr Chapman, Ms Wyton, Ms Hogg and all the MANY parents and relatives who came and helped out / supported the children over the three days. Also a big thank you to the office staff who assisted with lots of organisational aspects of what was a massive logistical operation.

Here are the medal winners:

Yr 3/4 Multi Skills – Gold

Yr 3/4 Football – Gold

Josh W – Table Tennis – Gold

Niamh H-B, Abdel A, Alexander W – Archery – Gold

Yr 5/6 Cross Country – Gold

Yr 3/4 Tag Rugby – Silver

Hannah J – Table Tennis – Silver

Yr 3/4 Boys Cross Country – Silver

Yr 5/6 Girls Cross Country – Silver

Yr 5/6 Boys Football – Bronze

Well done to the Year 1/2 Multi Skills and Cross Country, Yr 3/4 Girls Cross Country and  Yr 5/6 Basketball, Netball and Rounders Teams who also took part at the event. You were all fantastic!!!

A few quick highlights…
Sara having to retake a shot after the final whistle of the final group game in the netball competition to win the match 2 – 1 and making the shot!
Jamie R-E saving the final spot kick in a penalty shoot out to take the Year 3/4 footballers through to the final!
Alistair W running on to the finish without one shoe when another runner trod on the back of it (he was the fifth finisher of the Cragside boys and counted towards the points score that helped to win the gold)!
And finally… a teacher from another school emailing to say how delightful our girls had been throughout the netball competition!!

Games 500 Day 3 Update

The medal haul just kept growing on Saturday as everyone had a great time and produced some amazing results!
In the archery competition, Abdel won gold in the Year 4 category with an outstanding score of 80 and Alexander followed this up with a silver in the Year 5 age group.
In table tennis, Callum and Daniel both reached the semi finals. Daniel went on to win gold whilst Callum gallantly lost in a tight fought 3/4 place play off (always the hardest match to lose).
On the athletics field the Yr 5/6 team were excellent and only came 50pts behind the winners claiming a hard fought silver (enough to put them through to the level 3 regional finals!).
Last but not least, the badminton boys were enthusiastic throughout and in their skills circuit won an impressive gold!

So our final medal count was 5 Gold, 2 Silver and 3 Bronze! Well done to all who participated and to all the staff and parents who organised and supported the children! It was noticeable to see how many Cragside supporters there were at each event!

Games 500 Day 2: Medals Keep Coming…

We had four more teams in action today from Year 1 children right through to the Year 6’s. Thanks to Mr Green, Mrs Lackenby and Mrs CarrinoViereck for all your help with supervising and supporting the children at the events. The children all participated to their best and we had some excellent performances, not least from Ellie and Hannah in the tag rugby who scored loads of tries! However what was clear to all was the team effort and spirit by everyone…

The Year 1/2 multi skills team brought home a bronze, as did the Year 3/4 Tag Rugby team and the Year 5/6 Netballers got another gold to follow up their recent success in the High Five Tournament. Roll on Saturday morning’s competition.

Games 500 Day 1 Successes!

Well done to the Year 3/4 and 5/6 footballers and the Year 5/6 Basketball Team that took part in the Games 500 at Gosforth Academy today. Unbelievably they didn’t lose a match between them in their three competitions coming home with a Gold and Bronze medal. The Year 3/4 team won their final, conceding only one goal in six matches on a penalty shoot out in the final! Well done to the super goalie Faraz who made some stunning saves in that shoot out…

The Year 5/6 team were mightily unlucky not to progress to the semis losing out on goal difference in their league (and that was a last second winner!) and the Basketball team did extremely well winning four matches and drawing one on their way to the 3rd/4th place play off. You were all amazing and represented the school superbly!

Here’s hoping for more success on Day 2 and 3!
