Yesterday our boys and girls from Year 4 took part in a football competition at Benton Park. They really enjoyed themselves and played with a great spirit despite some tough results… There was an exciting penalty shoot out victory for one of the teams in the play off stages. Well done to them all!
A huge congratulations to all the team for a superb victory in the Bob Maddison Cup competition this evening! The match saw a resounding 3-0 win with first half goals from James and Patrick and a second half free kick from Jamie… However, this was an all round team performance just like those matches leading up to the final!
The game opened in an even fashion with no clear cut chances but gradually Cragside gained the ascendancy. Noah and Jamie were defending solidly and Max’s dribbling runs were starting to create chances for himself and others. One such break forward ended with Max hitting a post and the keeper saving the rebound. Daniel held a free kick from distance and did everything that was required of him between the posts. At the other end, the deadlock was broken when James met a cross and planted a firm downward header passed the keeper. Minutes later the lead was doubled as Patrick finished off a flowing move placing his shot low under the keeper’s body. With half time approaching, James, who had been playing so solidly in central midfield, was lost to a bad knee injury and the team needed to regroup during the break.
Jamie moved into midfield and put in a wonderful performance for the team and capped it off with a lovely finish after Max had been brought down outside the box for the second time. With Louis and Noah keeping things quiet in defence the opportunities kept coming and the team were unlucky not to add further goals with Ewan going close. The final whistle blew on a memorable night the typified the cup run as a whole! Each and every player had performed with great character and maturity and it has been a real pleasure to watch some of the quality football and team ethic that has been on display! Well done to you all…
The cup run saw the following results:
RGS (away) 8-2
St Lawrence’s (home) 6-2
Kingston Park (home) 10-2
Knop Law (home) 6-0
Gosforth Central (home) 3-1
St Albans 3-0
Well, after the beautiful sunshine of last week it was back to the grey drizzle!! But we didn’t let that dampen our spirits as twenty year 3 and 4 children took part in the local football tournament. All the children played their part and showed some wonderful team skills. Each team won or drew the majority of their matches and represented the school admirably. Well done especially in the unpleasant weather conditions.
A hearty well done to the Year 3 and 4 boys who took part in the NSFA Finals at Gosforth last night. Having won through the earlier round with out conceding a goal they faced St Albans and NSB in their finals group. A solid 1-0 win (goal by Charlie and some memorable saves from Alexander) was followed up by a convincing 3-0 win (including a brace for Tom) against NSB which saw them advance to the Quarter Finals as group winners! At half time in the last eight they found themselves a goal behind for the first time in the competition but a rallying cry at half time (no tea cups thrown) and two more goals from Tom meant a semi-final spot was won at the expense of RGS.
A well fought match ended 0-0 and in the lottery of penalties our boys missed twice and ended up losing out to Dame Allens. So in a total of seven matches they were unbeaten and only conceded one goal! A superb effort from all and they readily deserve all the plaudits!
Well done to the Year 3 and 4 boys who represented Cragside in the competition last night. With two wins and one draw and no goals conceded they have qualified for the finals. Goals from Jimmy and Tom helped secure a 3-0 win over Farne and that was followed up with a double from Charlie in the final deciding match against local rivals, Benton Park! A great effort by everyone, especially our goalkeepers, Alexander and Alfie, who didn’t have a lot to do but when called into action made crucial saves. Apparently team photos might be in the Chronicle this Saturday or the next.
Congratulations to all the boys and girl who represented Cragside over the Spring Term in the local league. We finished second with an undefeated record! There were many excellent individual performances across the weeks but most impressive was some of the team football that was displayed. Those who played were: Faraz; Alistair; Louie C; Ben; Louie S; Nathan; Olly; David; Thomas; Lewis and Naila…

Having just got over the disappointment I thought I should mention how well the boys did in the regional finals two weeks ago! Four local winners came together at the NUFC Training Centre for a clash of the titans…
In the semi finals Cragside were matched with a team from Cramlington who had won the Northumberland competition. In a closely fought match a looping shot off the bar by Harry Kane (aka David R) turned the tie in our favour. Another heroic save later from Jamie and Cragside were into the final and one step away from representing Newcastle Utd at Goodison Park, the home of Everton.
After a nervous wait watching the third / fourth place play off the stage was set. It was quite literally David against Goliath (that was the captain of the opposition) and it was a step too far for the intrepid campaigners from Cragside. A 1 – 0 defeat left us downhearted but proud of essentially finishing second out of 64 teams!
We will be back to fight another day (with five of our eight having another chance next year) as long as Newcastle stay in the Premier League!!
Well done to the Year 5 and 6 boys who won the sixteen team Newcastle area tournament this morning! Two wins and a draw in the group was followed up with a 3 nil semi final and close 2-1 victory over Walkergate in the final. A great save from Jamie in the dying seconds secured the victory and everyone played their part in a great team result (including Olly who had to leave early and isn’t on the photo). Onwards to the regional finals in a few weeks…
Also a mention for the Year 6 team in the Newcastle East Schools League that have three wins and a draw to their name so far!!
Well done to all seventeen boys and girls who took part in the OLT competition yesterday! They played extremely well with both teams topping their respective groups (only one defeat between both teams in 12 matches) which meant a Cragside showdown in the final. A tight match ended 2-0 but they all were winners in my book!
The Year 6 football team have continued to perform well in the local schools league which now sees us sitting third in the league:
Gosforth East P 8 W 8 Pts 32
St Charles P 8 W 7 Pts 25
Cragside P 8 W 5 Pts 24
Last week saw two local derby matches against West Jesmond and Benton Park. Both were closely fought encounters and after a goalless first half, Cragside scored quick goals to eventually run out 3-0 winners. Gareth Bale (aka Jack) added two to his tally, the second a great hit from distance. However the other stand out performer across the two games was goalkeeper Matty (or is it Neuer) with some excellent saves and moves off his line. In the second match there was plenty of aggression and passion from both sides. Cragside took the lead (through Bale again) but were quickly pegged back. But another wonder strike from Bale took it to 2-1 and Ben finished off the match from close range after a magnificent run down the flank by Josh. Everyone contributed to two excellent wins!
Well done lads
